21 September 2018

@ INTERFILIERE SHANGHAI – THU. 27th SEPT.  (11:45 am -12:30 pm)

INDUSTRY CONFERENCE by Kay LIU, Education Director @ REDRESS

Kay is responsible for spreading Redress’ educational message to fashion design institutions and the industry through public education speaking events. Driven by her design background, she believes solutions to the industrial clothing issues of today will be developed by the designers of tomorrow. Fluent in Chinese and English, she tells the stories of clothing production and the impact it has on the environment. A Masters graduate in Ethical Fashion from the University of the Creative Arts in the UK, Kay has spent over 10 years in different sectors of the supply chain. Sustainability runs deep in her blood and Kay was also an advisor for a social enterprise in Nepal for three years.

Undressing wastes issues :

It’s estimated the fashion and textiles industry sees a loss of over US$500 billion per year through the take-make-dispose production and consumption model, and less than 1% of used clothing is currently being recycled back into new. This economic loss is coupled with significant negative impact in our environment and society. An enormous 80% of the environmental impact is decided at the design stage, therefore, there is a huge opportunity for bringing more sustainable products to market via ‘better’ design. This presentation will explore, through the lens of circularity in fashion, how we can deploy tools and strategies to unlock the value of waste.
