1 March 2019

Jess Cheung, 23 years old from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She is passionate about design and is a persevering person. She is studying Intimate Apparel at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and had internship experience in Regina Miracle as a project assistant.

Q: Why did you choose the intimate industry? What do you find interesting about this industry?
At first, I think it is a promising industry. When I study deeper on intimate specialism, I found it is quite challenging. It is not only focus on design, aesthetic is not an only factor to consider when developing an intimate apparel. It requires technology support for comfort, function and fitting. It is much more professional when comparing with outerwear design.

Q: What will your dream job be? Where do you see yourself in 5 years, 10 years?
I hope to be a successful lingerie designer. My definition of a successful lingerie designer is not only to have endless design ideas, but also are able to handle whole process of design and development, from sketch, material selection, workmanship decision to fitting and modification.

In 5 years, I hope I can become a lingerie designer that can handle the design and development independently. In 10 years, I hope I am able to lead a team and be technical manager.

Q: Do you plan to create your own brand?
Creating own brand will be a dream of every designer and I am not an exception. However, I think it will be hard for the fresh graduates because this dream cannot achieve without enough career background. So after graduated, my goal will focus on enriching my related knowledge and accumulating the working experience of inmate apparel industry. When I think I am qualified enough, I will consider to create my own brand.

a full collection to be unveiled @ Interfiliere Hong Kong – PolyU Intimate Fashion Show on March 20th, 2019

My collection is called ‘Old Havana’. As the name implies, it is a lingerie collection inspired by Cuban ladies in traditional dress. ‘Retro’, ‘Nostalgic’ and ‘Exotic’ are keywords which suitable to describe my designs.

The Cuban traditional dress mostly consist of bright colors and light fabric, usually layered with pleats and ruffles on the sleeve, skirts and around the neck. It fits the body closely and has a deep plunging neckline.

The coming collection combined these design features of Cuban dress into lingerie such as puff sleeve and ruffles at bottom with 2 contrasting color which are olive and pumpkin. Also, a fabric design of a repeat pattern with flower details in high saturation was use as a highlight of the outfit so as to deliver a retro modern style.

Last but not least, I would like to thank my material sponsor, L&A Lingerie Ltd. for supporting the fabrics and accessories. It ease and smooth my step of material search.

I think the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s fashion trends have fizzled out and could totally make a comeback. These retro fashion trends were awesome to start with and could be even better the second time around. Fashion is cyclical, I believe the design concept and elements of my collection such as retro prints, ruffles, halter and flares bottom will be big in 2019 and last in coming years.
